The Earthworm

This old video (click on the link below) came up in a conversation with the kids the other day. Had completely forgotten about it. Our superstar, Eli (grade 2), is the TMNT shirt-wearing cutie (1:00)!!

Promoting Diversity, and Acceptance at Maple Ridge Secondary

As we come to the end of Pride Month, I want to share a couple of thoughts…

The high school my kids graduated from recently completed a mural in the front entrance of their school. Artwork promoting diversity and acceptance. I. Love. It. Way to go MRSS!!

We often think of high school as the worst place to be as a teenager, for some forever feeling inadequate, etc., but when this (pictured) is seen and read every day can it change one’s perspective? Can it lift that cloud that hangs over some?

We need to know that school is the one safe place for many students. A place where they can be their authentic self, a place where the adults are their only allies. A place where friendships, clubs and teams help them feel like they belong and are part of a family. Nobody should only be loved and supported 8 am to 3 pm, 5 days a week, 10 months of a year. NOBODY.

Maybe instead of looking at someone and judging, we should educate ourselves and learn to accept all people who come across our path. Imagine how much better our world would be!

Famous MRSS Dessert Concert & Silent Auction

Hard to believe as a senior, Adrianna keeps hitting 'lasts' for each high school performance that takes place *sigh*.  How did 5 years go by so quickly?!  Last night was their Christmas performance and fundraiser held at The ACT.  A fun evening watching hard working and talented students along with a little Christmas shopping at the silent auction.

Adrianna performed with the Sr. Choir, Sr. Concert Band (tenor sax) and Sr. Jazz Band (bari sax).  Eli performed with the Sr. Choir and Sr. Concert Band (tuba).

She Did It!

It's been a month of uncertainty as Adrianna's been waiting for results from her provincial exams - for one class in particular.    Finally she can let out that huge relief of air to know she did it!  She passed the course!!  All that hard work was for not.

It's A Victory Cake Kinda Day!

Eli receiving his honour roll pin

Some how.  One day.  It was decided that a victory cake would be part of our celebrations when big events take place.  Personally I think every day should be a victory cake day but the kids came up with it and the rules so we'll leave it at that.  Today it was in honour of being on the honour roll for the school year!

I Love Doing What I Do!

Scholastic Book Fair - Cassandra, Me & Tina

I've loved helping out at the school over the years. Hard to believe I'll only have two more book fairs to help with and then elementary school will become something of the past.

Memories.... August

AUGUST started with the kids being out of school for about a week doing lots of fun activities when I was hit with one of the worst chest colds I've had in a long time.  Bronchitis in August - YUCK!  Well medicated with a horribly barky voice and cough we packed up and headed to Clearwater for a Smith Family Reunion (Les's mom's side of the family).

We were the 'red' family!  Back row:  Les, Jen, Martie.  Front Row:  Adrianna, Russ, Eli
After that it was off to Salmon Arm to spend a couple days with Les's parents....

Left to Right:  Russ, Jen, Eli, Adrianna & Les

Time to head back home where later in the month the kids and I with Auntie Trish headed to the PNE for a fun filled day....

Just before having to head back music camp was attended!!  This will be Eli's first year participating in the school band program so he attended a week long beginner music camp.  He had lots of fun and is ready to start classes!  Adrianna took part in a junior concert band camp but I guess pictures weren't taken??

Sorry for such a dark picture....can you spot Eli and the instrument he's playing????
It seems September is just around the corner and we just might be ready for all the upcoming changes!!!

Shines in the Talent Show!

Officially the last day of school which means attending a LONG talent show!  However, when Adrianna is performing I can endure ANYTHING to watch her shine!!

If you're not sure what she's playing it's the theme song to Harry Potter AND the instrument she's playing is a tenor saxophone.  (You might have to turn up the volume, I just used my camera to video her).

Of course, when she tried out for the talent show a week prior to this performance she HAD to try something she's never played before!  She LOVES to challenge herself and stress me out (but its really not about me)!!

Grade 7 Moving Up Ceremony

I'm still finding it hard to believe that Adrianna is old enough to be entering High School!  Yikes!!  She had her Grade 7 Moving Up Ceremony this afternoon and of course was the most beautiful young woman there, just take a look:

Receiving her certificate from her teacher Mr. P

Received a Service Certificate for participating in Me2We

Auntie Trish (aka hair stylist) and Adrianna

SO beautiful!!

Auntie Trish did an awesome job!!!

These two are officially in different schools

Of course we had to have a little fun!!
She's had some pretty amazing teachers supporting and cheering her on along the way that have helped prepare her for the next chapter of her life.  We're so proud of all her achievements and accomplishments.  She's a hard working and very dedicated student and we looking forward to seeing her continue to excel in high school!

D.A.R.E. to Beat Drugs & Violence

Eli receiving his D.A.R.E. Certificate

Hello every one my name is Eli I am going to tell you how to be drug free and to keep you bodies healthy.

First I’ll tell you some things about smoking.  It causes lung disease, has 200 known poisons, goes to all body parts and is illegal less than the age of 18, makes your hair and clothes smell bad. Now for alcohol, it’s very dangerous and causes you to make car crashes and makes you act crazy and you won’t be able to control yourself.
Peer pressure there’s pressure, treason, bullying, friendly, positive, and tempting peer pressure.   Now how to say no to drugs.  Say no giving a reason or a fact changing a subject, repeated recourse or keep saying no use humor, saying stuff randomly to confuse them.

The  D.A.R.E. rules:  Raise your hand - one person speaks at a time,  be positive and respectful a put down can hurt feelings, observe and use the quiet signal, use the words someone I know instead of telling their name when saying a story, answer only the questions that are comfortable to you.
I am going to tell you what dare design making model is:

Define - describe the problem.
Assess - What are your choices?
Respond – Make a choice. Use the facts and information you have gathered.
Evaluate – Review your decision. Did you make the right choice?
I felt fine about D.A.R.E. I think it was just okay. That’s how I felt about it.   I hope you like my D.A.R.E. Report. To make wise choices and don’t use drugs.
